Working with Fractions
"Working with Fractions" here isn't about calculating faster — every question below is two people disagreeing about WHY an answer is right, not just what it is.
Rohit says multiplication always makes a number bigger, so multiplying 1/2 by 1/3 will give an answer bigger than both 1/2 and 1/3. Is Rohit right?
The question is: "What is half of 1/4?" Kartik solves it as 1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4. His sister says "of" here does not mean add. Who is right?
Siya says division always makes a number smaller, so dividing 1/2 by 1/4 will give an answer smaller than 1/2. Is Siya right?
Working out 1/2 × 3/2 = 3/4, Neha notices 3/4 is bigger than 1/2. She says she just learnt multiplication always shrinks fractions, so this must be a mistake. Is Neha's suspicion right?
