Arithmetic Expressions
"Arithmetic Expressions" here isn't about calculating faster — every question below is two people disagreeing about WHY an answer is right, not just what it is.
Abhinav solves 5 + 3 × 2 by working left to right: first 5+3=8, then 8×2=16. Tanya says his answer is wrong. Who is right?
Solving 20 ÷ 4 × 2, Sameeksha says multiplication always comes before division, so do 4×2=8 first, then 20÷8=2.5. Her brother says the order here is different. Who is right?
Divyansh says brackets are only added for easier reading and removing them does not change the answer. To test this, he works out both 10 − 4 + 2 and 10 − (4 + 2). Is Divyansh right?
Solving 18 − 6 − 2, Faisal first works out 6−2=4, then does 18−4=14. His friend says this method is wrong. Who is right?
